ACC: Asia Cup 2020 officially postponed to June 2021

The Asian Cricket Council formally announced on Thursday that the Asia Cup 2020 has been postponed, a day after Sourav Ganguly, BCCI chief and Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ehsan Mani revealed that the tournament would be postponed to next year.

According to ACC’s statement, “From the onset the ACC Executive Board was keen on organising the tournament as per the original schedule. However, travel restrictions, fundamental health risks, country-specific quarantine requirements and social distancing mandates have raised significant challenges for hosting the Asia Cup. Above all, the risks associated with the health and safety of participating players, commercial partners, support staff, fans and the cricketing community were considered significant.”

ACC commented on the matter, “Accordingly, the Board, after careful consideration of all the above factors, has determined that the Asia Cup 2020 be postponed.”

Carrying out the event in a responsible manner remains the ACC’s focus and it is expected that the tournament will take place in 2021. ACC revealed the revised schedule of the tournament,  “The ACC is currently working towards securing June 2021 as a suitable window for the same.”

As previously announced by the media, PCB, the Asia Cup 2020 host, has exchanged hosting rights with Sri Lanka Cricket for the tournament. Under this agreement, the SLC will now host the rescheduled Asia Cup which will be held in June 2021, while the PCB will stage the tournament in 2022.
