Manpreet Gony urge BCCI to allow indian players play in foreign leagues
The Indian Premier League ( IPL) is without question one of the best forums for budding cricketers to share their talents and rub shoulders with some of the sport ‘s greatest stars.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) rule of disallowing them or any other domestic player to compete in international T20 Leagues has proved to be a big topic of debate for domestic cricket veterans. They play only the IPL all year round.
Although quite a several star performers from the IPL have gone on to play for the Indian cricket team, other talented cricketers don’t get a chance to feature in the cash-rich league, despite a healthy domestic showing.
Gony further took the example of some cricketers performing in the Ranji Trophy but not having a chance in the IPL, while citing the need for the BCCI to offer these players an opportunity to explore opportunities in a foreign league.
The former pacer, who played two ODI matches for India, also shed light on the big issue he feels plaguing Indian cricket and the IPL in particular-lack of Indian coach promotion.
Although the BCCI has a flexible set of rules for the game ‘s longer formats and allows Indian cricketers to play in the English county season, Gony feels the BCCI shouldn’t think of the T10, T20 leagues abroad as an impediment to Indian cricket rising.
Having played Punjab cricket for over a decade, Gony called time to try a stint with the Toronto Nationals in the Global T20 Canada League on all types of cricket in India.
Gony was part of the Nationals squad caught by his good friend and former all-rounder of India, Yuvraj Singh, in particular. Gony talked about how it was a joint decision taken by himself and Yuvraj to take part in the T20 competition.
Though Gony understands the motive of the BCCI to keep the centrally contracted players fresh and at their disposal for national duty, the 36-year-old bowling all-rounder feels that the rest of the potential players should be permitted to fine-tune their skills in foreign conditions.
Gony claims that the rest of the year after the IPL goes to waste for those cricketers who appear only in the IPL, and that then, the BCCI would send those players a green signal to learn some new ability or technique from foreign ligaments.
And now that Gony career has begun a new chapter, the former all-rounder of India has been absent from the IPL over the past couple of years, despite doing well on the domestic circuit.
Nevertheless, with ample experience at the domestic level and from the IPL, Gony is happy to give the youngsters more chances and enjoy stints in international tournaments.
