[IPL]- CSK reject playing IPL 2020 if there’s an only local player
IPL 2020, which would indefinitely postpone, can be played in the September-October window if Australia is not hosting the ICC T20 World Cup.
Three-time Indian Premier League ( IPL) champions Chennai Super Kings rejected the idea of playing the tournament only with Indian players while differentiating with Rajasthan Royals. They are fine with the alternative given the current COVID-19 pandemic scenario. CSK feels like the absence of the players internationally will take away the sheen of the contest IPL is just like another domestic T20 tournament like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy without the international stars.
With the number of cases on the rise in India, Chennai Super Kings has not yet contacted the BCCI about IPL 2020 ‘s fate. The tournament’s future is hanging in the balance, but the BCCI is keen to conduct the event later this year as it would result in losses worth Rs 4,000 crore if this year’s IPL is not taking place.
The CSK source said the franchises currently negotiating the tournament with the Indian cricket board have no point in considering the situation around the globe. He added, though, that at the right time, the BCCI would take a call on IPL’s fate. BCCI also received proposals from Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates to conduct the IPL outside India.
Chennai Super Kings is one of the most popular franchises in Indian Premier League history and is headed by MS Dhoni, the former Indian skipper. They hold the record for playing most tournament finals. Also, in 2010, 2011, and 2018, they lifted the coveted trophy three times.
It was hoped that MS Dhoni would make a much-anticipated comeback with the IPL, but that was also postponed indefinitely. Teammates like Suresh Raina and Piyush Chawla have already spoken about the exciting return of Dhoni. According to them, Dhoni had a youngster’s determination before the league was suspended because of the lockdown enforced to contain the pandemic.
Rajasthan Royals CEO Ranjit Barthakur said the franchise was open to a shortened IPL with only Indian players the previous month. “We couldn’t have thought of an Indian-only IPL before, but now there’s ample price to choose from. It is easier to have an IPL-only for Indians than not getting it at all, “he told PTI.
