Waratah Cricket Club win the final by three wickets with 17 balls to spare, Waratah Cricket Club skipper Isaac Conway continued unbeaten for 42 runs from 46 deliveries. In the middle overs, the WCC suffered a batting collapse as spinners Matt Hammond and Dean Fry took four and two wickets, respectively. There were four boundaries to Conway’s innings. He kept his composure in the low-scoring game, with wickets falling on the other end.
In the Darwin T20 Cricket League final, the Southern Districts did not get off to a strong start. They have lost two wickets already and have not made the most of the powerplay overs.
WCC bowler Udara Weerasinghe bowls the innings in the final over. Thanks to overthrow, Michael Ninneman gets a couple of runs off the first hit. Half chance deep inside. Three runs off the second delivery for Ninneman, heading towards double figures. While Harvey gets to square leg a single one, Ninneman smashes the ball down the ground and gets a few runs. He lofts the next over mid-wicket and gets a few more runs.
The yorker for Udara, Ninneman gets an under the edge and has three runs off the final overs. The final over was the most productive of innings, with 12 running off it. With 17 out of 15 deliveries, Ninneman remains unbeaten. WCC-91/9 on 20 overs
Southern Districts failed to score high in the first innings earlier in the final against Waratah Cricket Club. In the innings, only two boundaries were scored, as Southern Districts managed to post 91/9 despite a significant batting collapse. The finale where 12 runs were scored was the most successful over of the innings.
Isaac Conway led the run chase with 42 off 46 balls of unbeaten innings while the remaining contributions were from James Seymour (13), Samindra Maduchan (10), and Sanka Wijegunarathne (5).
Matthew Hammond bagged four wickets for the Southern Districts, Dean Fry got two, and Corey Kelly got one, but despite a strong performance from the bowlers, the team couldn’t cause an upset.
Earlier Waratah was reduced in 20 overs to 91 for 9. The winning team earned significant contributions from Daniel Mylius (20), Dylan Mullen (17), Michael Ninneman (17), and Matthew Hammond (12).
Madura and Udara Weerasinghe bagged for Southern Districts a few wickets each, and Tristan Glover did the same.
The Darwin T20 League 2020 is the first cricket tournament played since the coronavirus pandemic hit the globe. In March, it was declared an epidemic, putting all sporting activities to an end.
The clubs that competed in the tournament were Palmerston, Darwin, Southern Districts, Tracy Village, Waratah, Nightcliff, PINT, and Invitational XI, which consisted of 15 matches played over 3 days.
The Marrara Cricket Ground, Gardens Oval, and Cazalys Oval were both played at all matches. In the match, the cricketers were ban to use sweat or saliva to shine the ball.
