Chelsea secured third place in the Premier League table with a deserved 2-0 win over arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva both scored in the second half for the Blues, with the former’s strike perhaps one of the best of the calendar year so far.
Both teams had a few chances in the first half but could not break the deadlock, with Harry Kane’s disallowed goal for a foul on Thiago Silva being the main talking point before the break. The game’s turning point occurred early in the second half when Ziyech curled a spectacular left-footed attempt into the top corner of the net.
Thiago Silva extended Chelsea’s advantage with a close-range header, sending the home crowd into raptures. Tottenham tried everything they could to get back into the game, but they could not do so as the Blues doggedly defended and thwarted everything that came their way.
Kepa Arrizabalaga didn’t have much to do, but he made a great save late in the game to keep Kane out. Despite the importance of the game and the history of the match, Chelsea won the game quite convincingly, securing their place in the UEFA Champions League.
The Blues sit third in the table with 47 points from 24 games, nine points ahead of fourth-placed Manchester United. On the other hand, Tottenham is in seventh place with 37 points despite having played four games fewer than Chelsea.
