Manchester City defeated Wolves 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night, extending their winning streak to 21 games. Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez scored for the Premier League champions.
City took the lead in the first 45 mins thanks to an own goal from Leander Dendoncker, but Conor Coady levelled the game with a header just after the hour mark, almost paying the price for failing to strengthen their possession supremacy.
With Pep Guardiola facing the risk of seeing City’s 20-game winning streak end, the table-toppers stepped it up late, with Jesus putting the hosts back in front 10 minutes from time.
With a well-taken ending in the 90th minute, Mahrez put the game out of reach, while Jesus added his second of the night with the final touch of the game as the goal – initially ruled out for offside – was awarded after a VAR examination.
City now lead Manchester United by 15 points before the Red Devils play on Wednesday night, confirming their status as champions-elect.
They are now two wins away from matching Bayern Munich’s record of 23 consecutive victories in each of Europe’s recognized “top five” leagues and six behind TNS’ world record.
