Arsenal’s David Luiz and Raul Jimenez of Wolves were involved in a sickening head collision
Former Tottenham and Hull midfielder Ryan Mason recommended that football concussion procedures be overhauled, describing them as ‘dangerous’ following the horrific clash of heads between Raul Jimenez and David Luiz.
During the early stages of Wolves’ 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday night, Jimenez was left unconscious after an accidental collision of heads with the Arsenal defender.
Before being rushed to the hospital, where he later had surgery on a broken skull, the Mexican underwent treatment on the pitch.
But before being replaced at half-time, Luiz was able to carry on while he was also allowed to drive home from the game, leading many to criticise the new rules on concussion in place.
After breaking his skull while playing for Hull against Chelsea a year earlier, Mason, who was forced to retire in February 2018, claims the rules need to change because they are not enough and ‘dangerous’ at present.
In the early hours of Monday, Jimenez had an operation on a broken skull and is said to be in a pleasant situation in a London hospital.
At the Emirates Stadium, the striker is understood to have regained consciousness until he was transported to the hospital.
His team-mates are known to be deeply worried about the 29-year-old forward, who is now facing an uncertain future, and when he may be able to leave the hospital, there is no time frame yet.
On Monday night, Jimenez took to Twitter to thank fans for their support, revealing that he is currently under observation but hopes to soon return to the pitch.
