Bet365 guarantees wages for the workers in the epidemic of coronavirus
The coronavirus epidemic has hit bookmakers hard, but online gaming giant bet365 workers have earned guarantees that they will be compensated given the ongoing pandemic that causes economic chaos.
A decimated sporting schedule has significantly impacted the betting industry, with British racing being called off till the end of April and football being postponed at the earliest until April 30. However, other sporting schedules have seen similar destruction.
Nonetheless, bet365 – which reported a turnover of £ 2.98 billion in December and an operating profit of £767 million in the financial year to the end of last March – vowed to guarantee the wages of its employees for at least the next five months and that no job cuts will occur in the same span.
The Stoke-based firm has more than 4,600 staff and has put in place a multi-million worker assistance program amid the Covid-19 global crisis.
A spokesperson for bet365 told the Stoke Sentinel: “In times of uncertainty, it was essential for us to remind our customers of the loyalty we have to them and the broader community.”
“They have been helpful in our progress, and will continue to be so in these challenging circumstances and beyond, when normality will finally be restored.”
The government would step in last week to support employers by offering to pay 80% of salaries – up to £ 2,500 a month – in an attempt to prevent job losses.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced new steps to try to stop the spread of coronavirus late on Monday evening, including more restrictions on when people in Britain would leave their homes. Citizens would only be required to leave their homes to go shopping for essential needs, for any medical necessity, to travel to and from the necessary work and for one type of exercise a day.
Any stores selling non-essential items must automatically close, and more than two people have stopped any meetings – except people you live with. Officers will have the authority to implement the new laws, and there will be at least three weeks of limitations in effect.
Sporting activities began to drop side by side on Monday as the World Health Organization (WHO) leader warned the escalation of the coronavirus pandemic.
