The Impact of Covid-19 on Online Gambling Industry
Due to the worldwide outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19), the Danish Gaming Authority (Spillemyndigheden) do not want to risk their chance where they have instructed non-essential staff to work from home during this period. All meetings in the office have been changed to online conferences.
Besides Denmark, other countries’ Gaming Authority has reacted with corresponding measures. For example, the Gaming Authority of Lithuania has announced that all applications for self-exclusion have to apply via online from 37th March 2020 onwards. The Latvian lottery and its Gaming Authority will not accept any visitors from 13rd March until 14th April. Furthermore, all land-based casinos in Holland will be closed till at least 31st March.
The outbreak has not caused just this but more especially on Sportsbook betting. All sportsbook operators are affected badly by this outbreak as all of the sports matches have been suspended till further notice. Followed by the confirmed cases in the Premier League teams, all other England matches have been suspended including the FA CUP, League one, League two and others.
Not only that, the top European major leagues have also been suspended. Apart from the Serie A who have been the first to announce to suspend the entire league, followed by Ligue 1 which suspended for two game rounds, Bundesliga suspended till further notice and La Liga to suspend till 3rd April. UEFA has announced to suspend all matches too including Europa League and Champions League till further notice. On the other hand, American sports has been affected too, all matches and leagues have been suspended including NHL, NBA and MLS. The American College Athletic Association（ACAA） has canceled the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments for 2020.
